Visits and exhibitions

Last December the Pensioners Association of Caja Madrid and the Zayas Cultural Club visited the headquarters of Talleres de Arte Granda (Granda Liturgical Arts), in Alcalá de Henares (Spain).

In Sydney, Talleres de Arte Granda participated in a sacred art exhibition at St. Mary’s Cathedral, at the invitation of George Cardinal Pell. TAG's representatives met many local Australian customers, as well as visitors from abroad. Among the works on display were a hand-embroidered chasuble, nativity scenes, sacred metalwork and a statue of the infant Jesus.

Recently Completed Works

Altarpiece for the Parish Church of Cuelgamures (Zamora, Spain)

The main altarpiece for the parish church of Cuelgamures has been completed; built in a Neoclassical style, the altarpiece has a polychrome finish and gilded mouldings.

The altarpiece is in three lateral sections, separated by Doric pilasters, and is topped with a gilded cross. The section dedicated to the Blessed Virgin has a niche containing a stained glass window.

Restorations

Artisans at Talleres de Arte Granda have begun the work of restoring two Baroque altarpieces in the Cathedral of Granada (Spain): one dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and the other to Jesus the Nazarene. The project is financed by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

Work continues on the restoration of the main altarpiece of St. Peter Co-cathedral in Soria (Spain), a project funded by Caja Duero. The Co-cathedral host an art exhibition beginning in May, with the theme: <>The Ages of Man: Interior Landscape

Also in the process of restoration is a 19th century Russian Icon of the Virgin Mary as Panagia Hodegetria: She Who Shows the Way. The name of the icon refers to Sanctuary of the Hodegetria, or Church of the Guides, in Constantinople, where the first icon of this type was housed.

Felix Granda Foundation

Belen Church in Havana (Cuba)

The library of the Felix Granda Foundation houses a huge collection of sketches, drawings and photographs that document the history of Talleres de Arte Granda (Granda Liturgical Arts) since its foundation in 1891.

This important collection give insight into the work and philosophy of Rev. Félix Granda y Buylla, the founder of Talleres de Arte Granda. This fascinating priest who combined his artistic talents and his sacerdotal vocation to devote his life to the renovation of sacred art. Drawing from his knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, he gave his works a rich iconographic content, but never neglected to give them a beauty that transcended their symbolism, and that could be appreciated by all who looked at them

One of his better-documented works is the main altarpiece of the Belen Church in Havana (Cuba). Commissioned by the Jesuit Fathers in 1915, it was the first of many international projects for Talleres de Arte Granda. Designed in a Gothic Revival style, the altarpiece houses a larger-than-life statue of the Sacred Heart in its central section. The design of this statue strongly influenced later works by Father Granda, such as the National Sanctuary of La Gran Promesa in Valladolid (Spain). At the feet of this statue, the four Evangelical beasts rise from a cloud. The lateral sections of the altarpiece include statues of the great Jesuit saints and the Fathers of the Church. A large tabernacle in the same style was also created.
